Two Italian varieties. One seriously interesting South Australian red.

If you're looking to shake things up beyond the usual Shiraz and Cabernet, this secret deal is worth a closer look. This 2021 Langhorne Creek red brings together Lagrein and Dolcetto, two Italian varieties that offer plenty of character and a welcome change from the everyday.

Lagrein is known for its dark fruit, savoury spice and firm structure, while Dolcetto brings juicy berry flavours and approachable drinkability. Together, they make for a distinctive red with dark cherry, blackberry and plum characters, complemented by earthy notes and a hint of spice.

Langhorne Creek's warm climate lends itself to generous fruit flavours, making this an intriguing Australian interpretation of these traditional Italian varieties. It's a great option for those who enjoy exploring lesser-known grapes without straying too far from familiar red wine territory.

Made by South Aussie winemaking royalty, Ben Glaetzer, this is a blend of two Italian red varieties, Lagrein (54%) and Dolcetto (46%). The Lagrein is matured in three year old French oak barrels for nine months, while the Dolcetto is cool fermented on skins for seven days and then matured in stainless steel. The aim of this is to preserve the variety’s traditional “fresh, floral notes”. Dark purple in colour, this is plush and dense and delightful. Notes of cassis, chocolate and blackberries plus there is a grapeseed note and sour cherry on the finish. Good length and, at just $22, this is cracking value. Perfect for a good barbecue or a gourmet pizza. - 92pts Wine Pilot
